Donington Park Round 4

World Stage Yields Top Ten for Oliver

The fourth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship, at Donington Park, supporting WorldSBK Acerbis UK, was the setting for Tom Oliver’s third top ten finish of the season, coming over the line on his SGR Racing Yamaha in ninth place.

The family run team from Morpeth, was thrilled at the opportunity to be supporting a World series, and got to work preparing the SGR Racing Yamaha for the flowing bends and tight turns of Donington Park. During the singular qualifying session, Oliver and the team worked hard and qualified in 12th place, ahead of what turned out to be another dramatic race.

When the lights went out the drama began with a start line crash, this lead to the Safety Car being deployed for two laps. Once the Safety Car pulled in Oliver was able to settle into his race and worked his way into the leading group.

Unfortunately, a small mistake at the Melbourne Loop cost the Colchester rider some time and he dropped off the back of the leading group. However, he kept his consistent race pace to bring the SGR Racing Yamaha home in a healthy ninth place, and scored more points.

Round 4 Donington Park
Tom Oliver said: “I was really lucky not to get tangled up in the start line crash. Once the Safety Car went in I felt comfortable and got up to eighth place. I unfortunately missed a gear at the Loop and that caused me to drop back a little losing the group in front. But I settled back into the race and maintained my top ten position. I’m happy with the result and I’m looking forward to a bit of a break before we head north to Knockhill, which is SGR’s local race so we will have a lot of support there.”

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “It’s been another great weekend and I’m really pleased with how well Tom raced. He used his head and after missing the gear he was able to get back into his rhythm and bring it home inside the top ten again. I’d like to thank EBC Brakes, as the second part of the track at Donington is very start stop and we needed their stopping power. I can’t wait to get to Knockhill as it is local for us and we can bring along our sponsors and friends who have been supporting us. Once again I’d like to thank everyone who is contributing to the team, we appreciate all their efforts as we wouldn’t be here without them.”

The fifth round of the Pirelli National Superstock Championship takes place at Knockhill in Scotland on 24th – 26th June.

Brands Hatch Round 3

Sensational Sixth at Brands Hatch for Oliver
Tom Oliver raced his SGR Racing Yamaha to a superb sixth place at round three of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship, at Brands Hatch in Kent.

The Morpeth based family team worked hard ahead of qualifying to give the Colchester rider what he needed from the R6 Yamaha. The effort paid off when he qualified in ninth place on the technical Indy circuit.

Off the line Oliver got away well, unfortunately the 22 lap race was red flagged on the first lap due to an incident. The re-started race was reduced to 18 laps and once again Oliver got off the line well and slotted in with the front group. However, the Safety Car had to be deployed on track mid-way through the race, and when it came back into pit lane Oliver didn’t get away as well as he would have liked.

The gritty 20-year old dug deep and battled his way from 12th through to a solid top ten finish and scored even more championship points, placing him in tenth place overall.

Tom Oliver said: “I’m well happy with the result! I got away well in the first part of the race but then it was red flagged and we had some time sitting in pit lane. Second start I also got away well but there were a lot of crashes so the Safety Car had to come out. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a good run when it went back in and I dropped off the front group. I worked my way to the front of the chasing group and fought hard to the end. I’m really pleased with the result, the bike and team are working well and I can’t wait to get to round four, next weekend at Donington Park supporting World Superbikes.”

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “That was a nerve wracking race! Tom was in the thick of things at the start and got bumped around a lot. His race pace was superb and he rode well in what was a chaotic race! The team has really gelled and I feel we are now getting into our stride. We are all pulling in the same direction and it is great to see everyone enjoying the racing. Tom is a tremendous rider and he did us all proud today. We are all now looking to Donington Park which will be exciting for sure.”

The fourth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 championship will be supporting the WorldSBK Acerbis UK Round, at Donington Park on 27th – 29th May.

Oulton Park Round 2

Top Ten finish for Oliver and SGR Racing at Oulton Park

Tom Oliver on his SGR Racing Yamaha achieved a ninth place finish at a very wet Oulton Park for round two of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 class, both he and the team were thrilled with the result.

Heading into the second round of the championship the Morpeth based family team was keen to pick up a top ten finish, and Colchester’s Oliver delivered just that. The British weather hindered qualifying at the picturesque Cheshire circuit making it an interesting affair. Damp to drying conditions in both sessions made for difficult qualifying, however Oliver kept his head and qualified in 11th place on the highly competitive grid.

The weather deteriorated further for race day and as the grid lined up ready to race heavy rain came down. This caused the race to be delayed as it wasn’t safe to start and it was reduced from 14 laps to nine.

Oliver got a good start and immediately slotted into eighth place amongst the leading group. He held this position for a number of laps until a problem developed with his visor. Unable to see clearly Oliver backed off slightly and settled into tenth position for a number of laps. With three laps to go Oliver’s visor issue improved sufficiently for him to make a move on Sam Thompson the rider in front of him, and he progressed into ninth position down through Cascades bends. He rode a sensible race to maintain this top ten finish and bag more championship points.

Tom Oliver said: “It was a tough race but I got away well with the front group. My SGR Racing Yamaha was working superbly and I felt we had the potential to get a podium. With the poor conditions my visor fogged up really badly. I would like to think if this hadn’t happened I could have finished on the podium, however it was a good result in very changeable conditions. Brands Hatch Indy circuit is the next round and I’m sure we can keep the top ten momentum going.”

Stephen Kinghorn Team Owner said: “I’m chuffed with how well this race weekend has gone. The weather made it difficult going for everyone but Tom stayed cool and calm throughout and did what he needed to get the result we had been aiming for. We had a new sponsor come onboard this past week so I was pleased we could reward SIG PLC with our first top ten finish so far this season. Thanks once again to everyone who has supported us and cheered us on our way, it is very much appreciated. I’m really looking forward to Brands Hatch, I can’t wait to see what we can achieve.”

Round three of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 championship is at Brands Hatch on the Indy circuit on May 20th -22nd.
