Fighting Fifth for SGR Racing

Fighting Fifth for SGR Racing

Tom Oliver and SGR Racing had a tough weekend at the fourth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship, supporting World Superbikes at Donington Park. Despite a free practice crash, the team worked hard and produced a welcome fifth place finish to further consolidate Oliver’s second place in the Championship chase.

A tumble at the Melbourne Loop during free practice left the team with a lot of work to do to the bike, just an hour and a half ahead of qualifying. As always, they pulled together to get the SGR Racing Yamaha back to full racing order, and Oliver headed out into qualifying. He had a good session running in second place, only dropping back to fifth place later in the session. Despite qualifying on the second row Oliver was confident of a solid result.

Once the race got underway Oliver dashed into second place and held third for a number of laps. As the race progressed the earlier crash seemed to be taking it toil as Oliver was struggling to get the bike out of the Melbourne Loop and this was losing him time, which he was doing his level best to make up on the rest of the track. Oliver fought hard to stay with the leading bunch and finished in a fighting fifth place

Tom Oliver said: “That was a tough race and my low side during free practice made for a tough weekend. Thanks to Aston and Steve for getting the bike ready to race in such a short space of time. I’m pleased to get more points and hold onto my second place in the Championship. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of Knockhill as it is such a short and technical track, I hope I can bring home a good result in front of our home crowd. This weekend has been an experience as I got to take part in the World Superbike paddock show, and was interviewed on stage with Michael Hill who also used to race with Steve Kinghorn spannering for him. It was a bit of team history going full circle!”

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “Another productive weekend and a very grown up performance from Tom as ever. Having an hour and a half to rebuild the bike was a push but we did it as a team, and Tom repaid us by bringing home even more points.  Aston, our brilliant mechanic, worked like a dream, we couldn’t have done it without him. Off the track we had a productive weekend too, we had a visit from Putoline Oils, which was great and a big ‘thank you’ to Fred Clarke and Michael Hill for helping highlight the team! Thanks for all the support we really appreciate it. The next round is our home round at Knockhill and I can’t wait. goes well there and we have a lot of guests coming along to support us – it’s going to be a good one!”

The fifth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship takes place at Knockhill in Scotland on 16th -18th June.
