Tom Oliver aboard the SGR Racing Yamaha achieved a third place finish in the Dickies British Supersport race, on Easter Monday at a damp Donington Park. The Morpeth based team has just stepped up to the supersport class and were thrilled to come away with a podium finish first time out.
The weekend got off to a difficult start with Colchester rider Oliver crashing out of free practice one. The Yamaha was repaired and Oliver was able to get back out on track. During qualifying it became apparent that there was an issue with the bike as Oliver dropped back from third on the time sheets to tenth.
With only a couple of hours until the first sprint race the team had to find the concern and fix it. Not an easy task but everyone worked calmly and together to get the bike ready just in time for the race. The race got underway in cold damp conditions and Oliver was battling for third place only to be pipped to it by Ross Twyman. However, Oliver’s last lap of the race was his fastest and it gifted him third place on the grid for the main feature race the following day!
Having the advantage of a front row start Oliver dug in for the 16-lap race, once again in tricky conditions, and brought it home in a superb third place.
Tom Oliver said: “I can’t believe how this weekend has worked out. From crashing at the beginning, to some technical problems, to being on the podium – it’s all been a bit mad! I’m absolutely thrilled with the results and how well the team worked this weekend. Stepping up to Supersport was definitely the right move and I now can’t wait to get to Brands Hatch. Thanks to the team for all their hard work getting the bike ready in time, they did a great job.”
Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “I’m so proud of Tom and the team today. They have all worked so hard to put our little team on the podium in Supersport, it is just amazing. A big thank you to Mark from Go Racing Developments, Stuart and Torren, they did a mega job getting Tom back out on track. Also well done to Gearlink Kawasaki on their double win, Norma would be so proud. I’m really looking forward to Brands Hatch now to see what we can achieve there.”
