Top Ten at Tough Knockhill

Top Ten at Tough Knockhill

The fifth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship at Knockhill in Scotland was a challenging one for SGR Racing and Tom Oliver who finished in eighth place.

At just 1.3 miles long the Scottish track is short and sharp with some tough turns, which always make for interesting racing and this weekend was no exception. Oliver was confident of a solid qualifying as he headed into the singular session. However, a fall from another rider right in Oliver’s path saw him abandon his hot lap and qualify in 11th place, putting him on the fourth row of the grid.

It was a difficult race from the outset but the Colchester rider got away well and made up a number of places off the line. Unfortunately, another faller had to be avoided on the opening lap and this pushed Oliver out over the rumble strips and he lost the tow to the leading group. He had a tough battle on his hands and finally completed the arduous 22-lap race in eighth place, maintaining second place in the Championship.

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Owner said: “What a weekend, we all worked really hard to get a result in front of all our guests. I’m pleased with Tom’s ride once again as he stayed calm and brought home more points. He was only 0.3secs off pole position, which shows just how close it was. As this is our local round we had over 50 guests there and they loved it. Recently myself, my daughter Georgina and my wife Ruth were features in Inside magazine. We actually had four guys come to the race to watch us thanks to that article. They came and found us in the paddock and wished us well. It was a really lovely moment, thanks to Inside magazine for the great coverage. Also a big thank you to the BSB commentary team both on the radio and TV, they did us proud this weekend.”

Tom Oliver said: “Although we scored points and have maintained second place, it wasn’t the result we had hoped for. Everyone worked really hard but for some reason something just wasn’t falling into place. We had a few set up issues and I was simply trying too hard which was actually slowing me down. Snetterton is up next and we have had a successful test there so I’m hoping for a better result.”
The sixth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship will take place at Snetterton 300 in Norfolk on June 30th – 2nd July.

Knockhill Round 5

More Points for Oliver and SGR Racing

Round five of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 class saw Tom Oliver finish in the points once again at Knockhill, in Scotland, in treacherous conditions aboard his SGR Racing R6 Yamaha.

The Colchester rider had never raced on the tight, undulating and challenging Scottish track, however Oliver settled into both qualifying sessions in different and difficult conditions, qualifying in 11th place after both sessions. SGR Racing from Morpeth were keen for a point scoring result as this is their local race.

As race day dawned the weather had not improved and the race set off in dry but unsettled conditions.  Off the line Oliver settled into a strong position following a difficult start. He worked his way forward to 10th place as the race progressed.

However, as conditions deteriorated Oliver backed off and raced a very sensible race to ensure more championship points. The race was stopped due to rain on lap 15 of 22 and Oliver brought his SGR Racing Yamaha home in a point scoring 14th position.

Tom Oliver said: “It really was a tough race. I’ve never been to Knockhill before so I had to learn the track. It’s not an easy track to get to grips with plus the weather was awful. I wanted a better result however, I brought it home in the points despite the difficult conditions. The next round is Snetterton, a track I know so I’m sure we can do much better. Everyone worked really hard so I was pleased to score some points.”

Stephen Kinghorn, Team Manager, said: “I’m really proud of Tom this weekend. He has never raced at Knockhill before and he did a great job. It’s a tough track to learn plus the weather is always so changeable here. He rode a very sensible and grown up race to once again be consistent and score more points.”

The sixth round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship is at Snetterton in Norfolk on 8th – 10th July.
